Use of pen drives for data transfer are in the tradition these days but so are the many problems related with these pen drives. And one of the problem is non-recognition of the removable disk drive though the symbol appears in status bar. This problem is generally occurred when windows fails to assign a drive letter to the removable disk inserted for the first time.
But the good part is this can be fixed using very simple steps using the disk management system follow these steps and most likely you would come up with a solution:
- Open Run, type “compmgmt.msc” and hit enter.
- Now click “Disk Management” on the left side.
- On the right side, right click on your USB Drive that appears in the disk management window and click change drive letter and paths.
- Assign a new drive letter to the USB Drive which is not assigned to any other drive.
- Now the Pen Drive will get displayed in My Computer.
Hope the above fix will work for you.

I tried to assign a letter to my pendrive as stated above, but this message was shown.
The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date. Refresh the view by using the refresh task. If the problem persists close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management or restart the computer.
I tried all the 3 thing i.e. refreshing, restarting Disk Management and even computer. But every time i get the same error mssg.
