Select Logoff and Logon option disabled… no fast user switching

“A recently installed program has disabled the welcome screen and Fast User Switching. To restore these features you must uninstall the program. The following file name might help you identify the program that made the change: MRVGINA.DLL” …. This massage was displaying from sometime to one of the computers running windows XP sp3.

What caused this problem to happen few days back I have updated the netgear driver and this disabled Use the welcome screen and Use fast user switching options. Though i was able to fix the problem by simply uninstalling the driver update but that was not a right solution to kick of. So this force me to look for a solution to solve the problem.

Method One: There is always a help displayed about the reason or the file causing the problem like in the above quote it is MRVGINA.DLL. Just search in Google using the tip which program or device using the file and disabled or modify the program settings. If it is a program not required any more you can uninstall it.

Method Two: As it is well known that any program installed, modify the registry settings. Some of which alters the settings required to change the login settings… which results in the disabled Logoff and Logon option. Though, you can always modify these settings later using registry editor like in my case it was described as follows:

After installing the new netgear driver/utility go to Start –>Run and type regedit.

When the registry editor opens browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/WINLOGON
Delete the key named GINAdll

Thats it….afterward you may want to go back into the control panel and check the ‘change the way users log on or off’ and make sure the welcome screen and fast user switching are both checked.

Now I hope this will help you if any other program or utility blocking windows log on feature… just look out of the keys from the reason displayed… but before you go for any changes don’t forget to have a backup of the registry.
